On Tuesday, two CALPIRG-sponsored bills passed out of key committees in the Legislature.
SB 832 (Corbett) requires textbook publishers to disclose the price
of their products in the marketing materials and on their website so
that faculty can make informed decisions about the books they assign to
students. Students spend an average of $900 a year on textbooks, and
our surveys of professors found that they often cannot find or get the
prices of textbooks before they assign them to their students.
In addition, the Assembly Health Committee passed SB 606 (Scott),
which requires prescription drug companies to make public all of their
clinical trial results, good or bad, so that patients have the best
available information about the safety and effectiveness of the
medicine they take.
Both bills now head to the Assembly floor for one final vote before heading to the Governor's desk.
