Today CALPIRG staff held nine press conferences from San Diego to Sacramento to highlight the need for the reform of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), and to release CALPIRG's 22nd annual toy safety report "Trouble In Toyland".

The CALPIRG staff were joined by five members of congress including: Susan Davis (San Diego), Lois Capps (Santa Barbara), Zoe Lofgren (San Jose), Mike Honda(San Jose), and Barbara Lee (Oakland).  Also speaking was Assemblywoman Fiona Ma (San Francisco).

This year's report, while still alerting parents to dangerous toys, is also aimed at calling for a necessary change in the agency that is in charge of protecting us from dangerous products, the CPSC.  Specifically CALPIRG is calling for Congress to:

- Give the CPSC more staff to better protect consumers and more authority to hold companies that break the law accountable.

- Make companies responsible for ensuring that their products-- whether from China or from Kansas-- are safe.

- Ban Lead in children's products.  Lead has no business being anywhere near a kid's toys.

We are relying on the CPSC to a big job so we need to make sure they have the resources to do that big job better.
