In the wee hours during the last night of the legislative session here in Sacramento some in the state senate were still in the mood for a little political chicken.
20 bills were held hostage, and eventually failed, because of a small set of completely unrelated demands.
One of the demands was to shut down the state's free tax filing website. The site is a direct competitor with other tax filing software such as Turbo Tax. In fact Intuit, the makers of Turbo Tax, are the driving force behind the campaign to shut down the state's website.
Aside from the inappropriate timing for making such a demand, the website is a great service provided by the state. The only people who can use it are the ones who are filing a 1040 EZ form, so basically low and moderate income people.
