Restoring the Public's Right to Know about Toxics

CALPIRG applauds Attorney General Jerry Brown, who sued the EPA yesterday for restricting public access to local toxic pollution information. Read the news stories in the Los Angeles Times and San Jose Mercury News.

The Attorney General isn't the only supporter of giving California's communities more information about harmful toxics. California Congresswoman Hilda Solis helped write The Toxic Right to Know Act (H.R. 1055 and S. 595), which would reverse the Bush administration rollback that allows more than 3,500 polluting facilities to keep silent about their toxic releases. In light of the EPA rollbacks, in California Assemblyman Ira Ruskin authored a bill that required California companies to continue reporting toxic release information to the state. The bill was signed by Governor Schwarzenegger this year.
