Legislative committee hearing considers appropriate next steps in the VW emissions scandal | Emily Rusch

Yesterday I testfied before a legislative committee hearing on the VW emissions scandal. From my testimony: "If a company produces a product that is defective, it should buy it back. If a company lies about what is in its product, it should buy it back. If a company tricks its customers into unwittingly polluting our air, it should make up for that pollution. It has been more than five months since the scandal broke and VW still hasn’t made any of these commitments to the customers it lied to."

Los Angeles Times: Lawmakers are fighting efforts to rein in predatory lending. Why?

"The [Consumer Financial Protection] bureau is effective precisely because it is an agency whose sole job is to look out for the best interests of consumers," said Emily Rusch, executive director of the California Public Interest Research Group. "No one should have to pay triple-digit interest rates on a loan."

SACRAMENTO — California received an F when it comes to government spending transparency, according to “Following the Money 2014: How the 50 States Rate in Providing Online Access to Government Spending Data,” the fifth annual report of its kind by the California Public Interest Research Group Education Fund.

Reformers in California assail Supreme Court campaign-finance decision

“We’ve seen what’s happening in Sacramento right now with pay-to-play politics. With this decision, the Supreme Court is codifying pay-to-play politics,” said Austin Price, field director for CALPRIG, the California Public Interest Research Group.

The ruling will have no effect on state-level campaigns in California, as the state’s campaign finance law does not limit the aggregate amount any donor can contribute to candidates for state office. The state law, like the federal law, limits the amount donors can contribute to any one candidate, and the court’s decision allows those individual limits to remain in place.

California Legislature Takes First Step to Require GMO Labeling

SACRAMENTO, CA — A bill that would require the labeling of genetically modified foods (GMOs) sold in California passed out of the Senate Health Committee today.

“Consumers have the right to know what’s in the food we buy. Polling indicates 90% of Americans want information about GMOs, just like we already require nutritional information,” said Austin Price, Field Director with CALPIRG.

FTC Supports Do Not Track, Meekly

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) released today a new report calling on Internet companies to put in place a "Do Not Track" system that would give consumers more control over their personal data online by the end of the year . The FTC also called on Congress to pass privacy legislation that would allow consumers to see how their online data is collected, used and sold, and give consumers the ability to stop such practices.
