Los Angeles a Hot Zone for Chemical Risks

Los Angeles, CA - CALPIRG and other community leaders pushed the Obama administration to take bold strides to reduce the danger posed to communities by high-risk chemical facilities surrounding Los Angeles during a public listening session at UCLA.  The listening session is part of an Executive Order from President Obama issued in response to accidents like the tragedy in West, TX tragedy that killed 14 people and razed nearby schools and homes, and the 2012 explosion at the Richmond, CA Chevron refinery that sent 15,000 people to the hospital.

Toxic Gas Leak in Carson, CA Sends 13 to Hospital

Los Angeles, CA-  On Monday evening a toxic gas leak at a chemical plant in Carson, California caused 13 people to be hospitalized and dozens more to be treated onsite, according to the Associated Press. The Obama Administration is holding a series of public hearings in consideration of tougher rules for the transportation and storage of toxic chemicals, including an upcoming hearing in Janaury in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles' new controller moved Wednesday to open city finances to quick and easy public scrutiny online, unveiling a website with extensive detail on how City Hall collects and spends billions of dollars. The website, Control Panel L.A., gives users access to a huge volume of data on taxpayer expenditures for police, sanitation, street repairs and other services — information that previously would have taken weeks or months to get through formal requests for records.

Big Banks Bigger Fees 2012

A survey of hundreds of banks and credit unions in 24 states and the District of Columbia found that free checking remains available at more than 6 out of 10 small banks and credit unions but was only found at one-quarter of surveyed big banks (those with over $10 billion in deposits). The survey released today by the California Public Interest Research Group also revealed that fewer than half of branches surveyed obeyed their legal duty to fully disclose fees to prospective customers on the first request, while 12% provided no fee information at all.
