Statement of Steve Blackledge on the Senate Passage of Redistricting Reform, SCA 3
“After
much fuss, the California Senate did the right thing by passing
redistricting reform. They voted to take the pen that draws political
districts out of their own hands and for that they should be commended.
“The
public can be cynical about politics, and the most cynical believe
they’re more likely to see pigs fly than elected officials vote to
relinquish even an ounce of power. Today’s vote should help to reassure
voters that at times our elected officials will do the right thing even
when it may not be in their self interest.”
“Senators
Lowenthal and Ashburn worked tireless on this issue. I hope the
momentum from their Senate floor victory carries over to the Assembly.
After all, it’s all for naught until the Assembly follows suit.”
