Key Patient Rights Bills to Prevent Unfair Health Care Costs Face Crucial Votes This Week

SACRAMENTO, CA—Key legislation to protect patients from unfair health care costs faces crucial votes in the California legislature in the next week, beginning tomorrow in Assembly Health Committee.  The five bills, most of which have already passed one legislative chamber, include some of the most lobbied legislation this session, such as a measure to stop surprise medical bills and another to provide notice and disclosure on prescription drug costs.

Privacy, Consumer Groups Critical of Facial Recognition Report

We've joined leading privacy and consumer advocates in a news release sharply critical of a supposed "best-practices" report released today by the Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) concerning privacy and facial recognition technology. While the report purports to be the product of a "multi-stakeholder" process, all the leading privacy and consumer stakeholders dropped out of the skewed proceedings many months ago, as the release explains. It concludes: "There is much more lacking in these “best practices,” but there is one good thing: this document helps to make the case for why we need to enact laws and regulations to protect our privacy."

Local and National Democracy Advocates Urge Governor Brown to Sign the Overturn Citizens United Act

Today the California Senate passed SB 254 The Overturn Citizens United Act in a 26 to 11 vote.  The bill now goes to Governor Jerry Brown's desk. SB 254 would place a voter instruction on the November ballot that would ask Californians if their representatives should “use all of their constitutional authority…to overturn Citizens United v. FEC and other applicable judicial precedents.”
